Although the real-world value of ASE certification continues to be an ongoing debate, I found myself signing up for still another series of ASE recertification tests this year. Truthfully, I've lost count of the number of recert tests I've taken since 1973, which was the first year I signed up for the first four of eight skill areas in the auto technician's certification tests.

VOICES Have I Got a Proposition for You
It's time for shops to understand why they need to belong to an association and make the commitment to actively participate to improve the professionalism of the industry from which they derive their livelihood. In my opinion, it is also high time for independent automotive repair professionals to raise the bar for themselves on behalf of the consumers they serve.

VOICES The Choice to Share: A Force For Good
At most shops, one guy generally rises to the top and shines. Let's call him 'Joe.' He'll be the self-reliant type. He usually won't be prone to ask anybody for help; he generally figures things out on his own. This attitude will elevate him to a level of respect among his peers that most people never reach.

VOICES When Technology Overwhelms
I firmly believe – because I practice it – that if you use the service information that is available, you will be successful repairing cars. I also believe that if more people in our industry took the time to strike compromises and learn from one another, the entire industry would be better served.
